About Us
Dr. John M. Calhoun, a 50-year veteran tax expert with an honorary doctorate degree for his books and lectures, is the author of eight new tax booklets for the self-employed home business operator.
In the late 1970’s, due to widespread abuses and hundreds of IRS complaints, Congress and President Jimmy Carter cancelled the home business tax deductions.
Unfazed, Dr. John M. Calhoun went to work. Consulting with the (then) twelve-member Direct Selling Association, he went to Amway, Shaklee, Classic Creations, Neolife, Cambridge International, American Dream International, and many others to help write the home-based business tax law, which restored tax deductions for business use of the home. Since these organizations were most directly affected by Carter’s decision, they readily supplied signatures to show the House Ways and Means Committee they needed this legislation.
Consulting with the U.S.Chamber of Commerce and Citizen’s Choice, a division of the Chamber, he applied that clout to the the Ronald Reagan administration. When asked which member helped the most after Calhoun had drafted and submitted the legislation, he replied that “the security guard at the House Rayburn Building who allowed me to park there while I conferred with House Ways and Means.” It didn’t hurt his cause that he is a Life Member of the Republican Party and often entertained legislators at his Palm Springs home.
Because this legislation was so timeless, it has remained current and when it hasn’t, Calhoun has challenged or sued the IRS, winning each time. “After all, I sat in on Committee deliberations, and I know what they intended.”
